For a long time the options for phone calls the US or Canada anywhere in the world was using a landline. These calls were expensive. Then with the internet we were able to call computer to computer using instant messaging with a voice application. Eventually there came Skype, Yahoo Phone and Vonage. For these applications all you need is a decent DSL connection. Some of these services have a per minute fee. Some are for outgoing calls and some let you get a local US phone number. Not all area codes are available and you might end up getting a local phone number close to the area most of your calls come from.
Now there is MagicJack. MagicJack is a small device you plug into a USB port on your computer. You have the option to use a computer headset or plug a regular phone into the phone jack on the end of the device. When you first pug it in a setup screen opens where you pick the area code and town you want your phone number.
Even if you live in the US or Canada and make a lot of interstate calls you can use this service. With a MagicJack you can reduce or stop your long distance costs from your monthly phone bill.
The system gives you the following services:
• Voice mail, you can check your voice mail by dialing your number or by the mp3 file sent to your registered email account
• Free local and long distance to anyone in the US and Canada
• Free calls to the US and Canada from anywhere in the world with internet
• Free incoming calls to your MagicJack personal phone number
• Free calls outside the US and Canada to any MagicJack-enabled phone
For only $39.99 you can purchase your MagicJack which includes one year of service. After that all you need to do is renew your service for $9.95 a month. Currently they have a special for 5 years of service for only $5.95.
I have had my MagicJack for about a month now and I have had no problems at all. The calls are clear. Instead of emailing my family and friends in the states either they or I just need to do is pick up the phone. Of course your computer needs to be on and connected to the internet. There have been times when I get an email with a voice message. All I do is then plug it in, start the program and call back the person who left the message.
If you live outside the US or Canada, have family traveling anywhere in the world, have a soldier on assignment overseas and have someone to keep in contact with in the US or Canada, this is a great way to keep in touch.
The device is only 2 ½” x 1 ½” x ½” so it is light and easy to carry so you do not have to carry a big box around. When needed, just plug it in and start calling. It is as easy as that.

I bought one a few months ago. Works great. It has saved me several times the purchace price in phone cards plus I get to call everyday instead of a couple of times a week.
I activated it here in the US then sent it to the Philippines. I just bought a cheap phone to plug it into instead of using a headset.
The only drawback at all is having to have the computer on when you use it but what do you want for $20 a year. The increase in the electric is cents a month. Well worth it.
Tom,
I agree it works great. With the feature of getting a email of any voice mall works great too. A few times I received the email while the magicJack was not connected. I would connect it back in an and return the call.
were thinking of buying 1 for the family in davao, whats the monthly on a dsl line in davao?
Banot’s Asawa,
We have PLDT landline and DSL and we pay about 1600 Php a month. There is also available a 3G modem that plugs into the USB and you load it like a cell phone as needed. It is 20 Php an hour. I even know of someone with a laptop who goes to wifi coffee shops, plugs in his MagicJack and phone an makes calls from there.
i have a magic jack a long time ago already..
i bought 2— one here and the other one i sent it over there..
because i thought that you can only communicate to a magic jack with a magic jack when you are in the Phil..but now i have learned that you can just buy one and put it in the Phil and you can call the landline or cellphone from the Phil. without any additional charges…
it is really cheaper than the vonnage and buying phonecards..
Evelyn,
Yes, it is a cheaper and handy way to communicate. Maybe full a box of them and I will sell them here. I will split the profits.
i don’t think you can buy more than 2 per household?
it would be hard to activate under one name/address?
Evelyn,
They do not need to be activated there. A friend bought me one in the States and gave it to me, still in the packaging. I installed it and activated it here. There are some places here sellig them for $75 USD. We could sell them cheaper and still make a profit. With enough in the Balikbyan box, the shipping would be small per unit. Or Else, buy online from my site.
is that a fact?
ok i’ll research on that..
You can activate them there with a US number? I thought you had to be here to do that. That is very interesting. Counting the first year of service they are $40 here. Hmmmmmm.
By the way, Bruce, i haven’t seen Stefan’s comments here?I wonder where he is now?I promised to give him a tour around Gensan.Should he keep in touch with you, please tell him that I have an open invitation for him..My friends,(whom you met) are more than willing to bring him around the city..
Evelyn,
If I remember correctly, Stefan is on vacation traveling somewhere. I do not remember where and how long his trip is planned.
so he must be in gensan while we are
talking now….hahahaha….
well, i hope he reads this ..
i am more than willing to give him a tour..
i mean my friends over there would love to bring him around the beautiful gensan..
Evelyn,
Tell the ladies to look for an old fair skinned foreigner with a funny accent and you will find him.
ok…so he has a funny accent huh?
i will tell them about that..hahahaha
Yes I have sent one to Family in Leyte, and one to Cebu, and both work GREAT. I also sent one to a business contact in Manila. I am actually a reseller for them here in the US and was thinking of sending like 5000 of them to Cebu, but my business contact said that stores already had them, and at a price where we could make little to no money.. But now I have a friend in Davao who needs one, any idea if a retail store there that sales them?
Jason,
I saw a flier that some stall in Victoria Mall was selling them, but they had the price at $75.00 USD. Maybe send me the 5000 and I will try to sell them for $50 and split the profits.

Omoniyi,
I am interested in your offer and will email you directly for future contact.
Evelyn,
As I mentioned, I got mine in the package, installed it, registered and activated it. It works.
Evelyn,
I would guess, I have not met a person that from Sweden that did not have an accent.
Of course they all think you have an accent.
Tom,
I plugged it in and during the instal/registration you enter country location, email address and the state, city and area code you want. There was no item of a existing local phone number.
Tom,
True, if your not at local area, we all have accents. Ya_all. hahah
