Helping is Good for the Soul

Through this site I met and became friends with John Ray, a 25 year young man who lives in Palawan. He is living in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

Both him and his lovely wife Bernadette are recent graduates of a Bachelor of Secondary Education at Palawan State University in Puerto Princesa City and are both teaching at Roxas Bible Baptist Christian Academy.  John was an English major and Bernadette majored in Social Sciences.

Both are now teaching to their fellow countrymen. From what I have read he has a very good knowledge of English and I am sure his students will be above average compared to other children in the Philippines with their ability to communicate in the International language of English.

John had a “Blogspot” blog where he writes about Palawan. When he read my article about the increase of visitors and the great service I recei

ve from HostGator as my hosting service he wrote a comment and emails about how he wished to have his own domain and site, but because of his income and lack of credit card he felt it was impossible.

Well, feeling for a nice man who is trying to find avenues to tell his stories, ideas and observations about his country, island, province and his life and to possibly increase some income for himself and his family I felt I wanted to offer to help in some small way.
With my Hosting service, I have unlimited domains, so I offered to put his site on my service. I also agreed when he asked if he sent me the cost, to purchase his domain registration for him.

Yesterday he send me the cost of the domain registration by Western Union., so in the afternoon I registered it and this morning I put it on my hosting account. Now John is busy designing and developing his site for our enjoyment.

I hope you will visit, comment and enjoy this nice mans passion of writing his thoughts to inform the world of his home. Excuse if the look of the site changes, he is developing it and finding just what appearance fits his personality and the feeling of the site.

So please visit Palawan Anecdotes, read his thoughts and let him know we support his hard work.

  3. Hey Bruce thanks for helping JR out. JR is one of my good friends when he was still in Cebu. Great site by the way !

    • Bruce says:

      Guerilla,
Thank you. I met JR through his blog, then he visited mine. I felt for him in his situation and my heart felt it was the right thing to do. Plus, I would hope he would point his freinds to my site since I would love more comments from Filipinos still in the Philippines to hear what they think of my observations living in their country from a foreigners eyes. I now feel like him and his wife are friends, even if we never met.
P.S. I am one of your subscribers and have read your book.

  4. Hi Bruce,

I certainly agree with this article’s title and its content. Helping others does take away from our own self-centeredness and take into consideration other people’s needs. Most people feel that pursuing one’s own goals and achieving them is the source of happiness and tranquility. I diagree. The endless goal-setting and pursuant never ends, and only produce temporarity happiness. It’s only when we give more than we take, that produces permanent happiness and tranquility. JPB.

      Julius,
I love to help people. I cannot help with money, but connections, introductions, or what ever I can. I had even showed an architecture student how to use AutoCAD.
I like to help where I can. Maybe some day my Karma will improve.

  5. Bruce, I will visit Johns site now, I have been to Palawan and it just amazingly beautiful. The people and the nature was totally amazing. Very peaceful place. I regret that I didnt accept the mayor of Port Barton daughter’s marriage proposal!!!! I might have lived there now if I did!!!!…..Hehehe…

Like you said Bruce, it is so nice to help others. I truly believe that is what can change this world, if that attitude becomes something that all people will adopt.

    • Bruce says:

      Stefan,
John is developing his site so it does not look so great. Thank you for your kind words for me. If you like I can ask John to find out if the Mayors daughter is still interested and I will fly there to attend your wedding. 🙂

    HI BRUCE.

I VISITED YOUR BLOG SITE JUST TONIGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME. I STUMBLED UPON IT WHEN I GOOGLED “WHAT’S NEW IN DAVAO CITY?” BECAUSE I MISS DAVAO CITY A LOT (THE FRIENDS, BEACHES, THE BANDS,ETC..). I WAS BORN IN DIGOS CITY (SOUTH OF DAVAO CITY) BUT I HAVE LIVED MORE OF MY ADULT LIFE IN DAVAO CITY. I MET A VACATIONING AMERICAN IN DAVAO CITY IN 1996 AND SHE CAME BACK IN 1999, 2002 AND FOR OUR WEDDING IN 2004. NOW, I AM LIVING HERE IN ILLINOIS WITH HER. I ARRIVED HERE IN THE STATES IN JANUARY OF 2007 AND HAD NEVER SINCE SEEN THE OCEAN AGAIN UNTIL OUR VACATION TO FLORIDA ON FEB. 4TH-9TH. WE DROVE TO MELBOURNE FLORIDA TO SEE THE SUNRISE IN THE ATLANTIC AND WE ALSO DROVE TO CLEARWATER TO SEE THE SUNSET. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL THERE, HOWEVER, THE WATER WAS COLD. HE HE HE. I MISS THE WARM WATER OF DAVAO BEACHES LIKE TALIKUD ISLAND AND PARADISE ISLAND. I HOPE YOU’LL GIVE AN UPDATE ABOUT THOSE PLACES. WE HAVE BEEN PLANNING TO VISIT DAVAO IN AUGUST THIS YEAR BUT, I GOT LAID OFF FROM WORK (AS AN ELECTRICAL DESIGNER/DRAFTER) AND AM NOW ON UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS. SO, IT IS NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR. BUT, I AM GLAD TO HAVE DISCOVERED YOUR SITE AND YOU CAN BE SURE THAT I WILL CONTINUE TO VISIT IT REGULARLY SO I CAN GET UPDATE ABOUT DAVAO. I ENJOYED READING YOUR BLOG, PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. THANK YOU.

    LITO

Ran on to this today in LA Times. Importing Filipino teachers for the California school system. I know lots of Filipinos have gone to the States to work as nurses, but this is the first time I have seen anything about teachers.
Here in Brazil a lot of people would jump at this, but unfortunately, very, very few are fluent in English.
